The JSudoku Window

The grid is on the left-hand side. The right-hand side shows a tabbed pane with either a log of all actions or the list of solvers. You may move the separation between the grid and the log to resize them. The status line and timer are displayed at the bottom.

The solved and given cells are displayed in black text; the unsolved cells are in green text.

The focused cell is framed with a red border. The focused cell process keyboard shortcuts except most menu shortcuts. When the mouse moves over the grid, the cell under the mouse gains focus. When the mouse moves out of the grid, the whole grid gains focus and is framed with a big red border. When clicking in the log, list of solvers or another item, this item gains focus and will process regular key presses; the cell or grid will loose focus, they won't display a red border and won't process key presses any more.

The selected or highlighted cells are displayed with a blue background. Most key press are processed by the focused item (cell, log, list of solvers...), not the selected cells. See keyboard shortcuts for details.
To select a cell, just left-click on it. One may also press the space bar to select the focused cell.
To select a rectangular range of cells, press the left mouse button on one corner cell and drag the mouse to the opposite corner cell. One may also left-click on the first cell, then on the opposite cell while pressing the shift key.
To select an irregular or disjoined range of cells, select first some of the cells then, while pressing the control key, select the other cells either by a simple click, by click and drag or by shift-click. Under Mac OS, this is the command / Apple key since the control key will bring the contextual popup menu.
When pressing the control key, the selection will toggle. If the cell clicked was unselected, pressing the control key will extend the selection. If the cell was selected, pressing the control key will unselect the cells dragged.
To select an irregular range of cells, one may also press the alt key, left-click and drag the mouse over the cells to select. It selects all the cells traversed by the mouse.
To select all cells in a house or cage, one may also use keyboard shortcuts

In the example here over, one may click on R1C1 and drag to R1C9. Then, while pressing the control key, click on R3C4 and drag to R1C6. One may also left-click on R1C1, then shift left-click on R1C9, then shift left-click on R1C6, then shift left-click on R3C4. One may also move the focused cell to R1C5, type alt-R to select the cells in R1 then type shift-alt-B to extend the selection to N2.

When the Log or Solver pane is focused, they will always process regular key presses.

Click on the Solvers tab to view the solvers. You may turn each solver on or off if you want to use or skip some specific technique. The solvers are used in the order displayed. To change the order, select a solver then drag it over another one. The dragged solver is moved above the dropped one. Some solvers are specific to some variants like Killer Sudoku, Jigsaw, (non) consecutive... and will be disabled for vanilla Sudoku.
