Installing JSudoku

JSudoku is a Java executable program compatible with MicroSoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X. Although not tested, it should also be compatible with any Java enabled desktop system like Linux...

Installing a Java Runtime Environment

JSudoku requires a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Java 2 Standard Edition (J2SE) version 1.4.2 or later.

MicroSoft Windows apparently does NOT come with a preinstalled JRE. The JSudoku.exe program will check the JRE and open the download page in your browser if none is installed. When launching the JSudoku.jar, if no JRE is installed in your system, you should get a message about an unknown file type. You'll then have to install a JRE.

Apple Mac OS X comes with a preinstalled JRE. So you may proceed directly.

If no JRE is installed, I recommend to install the Sun JRE J2SE version 1.5 or later. You may download the Sun JRE J2SE for free. Follow the instructions.

Installing the PDFBox package

The PDFBox package is optional. JSudoku will run without it, everything will work except Fetching killer sudoku from killersudokuonline.com.

You may download the PDFBox package for free. You will get the file 'PDFBox-0.7.3.jar' (or a newer version)

In order for the PDFBox package to be recognised by the JRE, you will have to install it in the appropriate JRE extensions directory.

For MicroSoft Windows, you should move the file 'PDFBox-0.7.3.jar' into the JRE extensions directory: \Program Files\Java\jre1.5...\lib\ext\
Notes: The jre1.5... may list another version. Whenever you update the JRE, another 'jreX.Y' will be created in \Program Files\Java\. The update does not copy the extensions previously installed, so you'll have to copy or move the 'PDFBox.jar' into the extensions of that new JRE version.

For Apple Mac OS X, you should move the file 'PDFBox-0.7.3.jar' into the folder /Library/Java/Extensions/
Note: For foreing languages Systems, Library will be listed in your language (eg Bibliothèque in French). If there is no Java folder in the Library folder, just create one yourself. Dito for the Extensions folder.

Installing the Help files and documentation

The Help files may be installed in the same directory as the JSudoku program. For instance, if the 'JSudoku.exe' file is installed in the directory '\Program Files\JSudoku\', the program will look for the help files in the directory '\Program Files\JSudoku\docs\'. If no such directory is found, the program will get the help files from the web.

You may download the Help files and install them in the same directory as the JSudoku program.
